Andromeda's Journey: A Second Chance

Rescuing a reptile is a unique experience. Unlike a dog or a cat, a gecko can’t vocalize their discomfort or express gratitude with a wagging tail. But watching an animal go from merely surviving in poor conditions to completely thriving in a habitat built for them is one of the most rewarding parts of keeping exotic pets.
This is the story of Andromeda, her rough beginnings, and how far she’s come since joining the family.
The Beginning: A Rough Start
When Andromeda arrived on the 17th May 2025, her situation was far from ideal. She was previously being housed in a cramped 45 x 45 x 30 cm terrarium—a space far too small for an adult leopard gecko to display any natural behaviors, let alone thrive. On top of that, she was severely overweight, the result of a monotonous diet of only mealworms combined with a total lack of room to move around and exercise.
Her environment lacked almost all basic necessities:
Substrate: She was on harsh reptile carpet, which can catch tiny claws and harbor bacteria.
Hides & Enrichment: She had only two small hides and a tiny water dish, leaving her with practically nowhere to feel truly secure or explore.
Lighting: Her UV light was coated in a sticky layer of nicotine residue from her previous environment.
When she first arrived, she was
understandably cautious. Leopard geckos rely heavily on scent and environmental cues, so bringing her into a clean, safe space—and addressing her weight and overall health—was the immediate priority.
2. The Transformation: Building Her Paradise
She was initially moved out of that tiny glass box and into a 115 x 37.5 x 42 cm vivarium to start her recovery, but her upgrade journey didn't stop there. To truly give her the ultimate quality of life, she has since been rehoused a final time into a 120 x 45 x 45 cm vivarium.
This forever setup gives her significantly more floor space to roam, extra vertical height, and endless climbing opportunities:
Naturalistic Environment: Out went the reptile carpet, replaced with specialized sand substrate. She was given climbing branches, natural rocks, and dense fake foliage to offer cover, visual barriers, and plenty of physical stimulation.
Appropriate Hides: Instead of just two cramped spots, her enclosure features dedicated warm, cool, and humid hides, allowing her to self-regulate her temperature and shed cleanly.
Precision Environmental Controls: Her space was fitted with proper heating controls to maintain a precise thermal gradient—a 32°C basking spot, a warm side of 29°C, and a cool side of 25°C, complete with a natural night-time drop. She also got proper, safe UVB lighting courtesy of a ShadeDweller 7% lamp.
3. Thriving in Her New Life
It didn't take long for Andromeda's real personality to shine through once her environmental needs were met and her diet was balanced out.
She quickly settled into a regular, healthier routine. Today, she is fed supplement-coated, varied insects three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays). Between a diet with proper variety and the freedom to climb, stretch, and explore her spacious 120cm vivarium, watching her trim down into a healthy, active gecko has been incredible.
Rather than hiding away in stress, she now actively utilizes every inch of her enclosure. Whether she's splooting on her warm basking spot, tackling her climbing branches, or hanging out in her cool hide, she is a confident, healthy, and happy gecko.
4. Final Thoughts
Andromeda’s story is a reminder of why proper research, husbandry, and rescue work matter so much in the exotic pet community. Reptiles are resilient creatures, but they depend entirely on us to recreate their natural world within four walls.
Seeing Andromeda thriving today makes every bit of effort worth it. She was given a second chance, and she has taken full advantage of it!
